The players win points by shooting the ball inside the opponent’s hoop. At the same time, they try to prevent their opposing teams from putting the ball into their own hoop.
Besides the five basic positions, some teams use non-standard or hybrid positions, such as the point forward, a hybrid small forward/point guard; the swingman, a hybrid small forward/shooting guard; the big, a hybrid power forward/center; and the stretch four, a power forward with the shooting range of typical shooting guards.
These positions can be a little fuzzy at times because nothing in the rules says you must have a specific player on the court assigned to each specific position. A coach could put 4 centers and a small forward on the court, or he could play 3 shooting guards and 2 power forwards.
Upon catching the basketball or raising up into a shot, players must be able to quickly adjust their hands to the correct positions on the basketball. The shooting hand must be under/behind the basketball and the balance hand should be on the side of the basketball.
