The best formation starts with a girl’s best friend… a diamond. We have to keep things really simple for ALL levels of youth players. We do not want to restrict creative activity / thoughts, but at the same time we want to teach the game and certain thoughts early on.
This is NOT an article about the best formations in soccer. This is not a reference for the Premier League, the MLS, or National teams. It is the basis for youth development that we use at SoccerU.com that teaches players the right thoughts, decisions, and visual keys. It makes the transition between the age levels easier and more developmental.
2-3-1 Formation. The most popular and commonly used 7v7 formation, the 2-3-1 has everything you could want from a line-up. The two defenders offer stability at the back while the striker up front is supported in attack by the three midfielders who are also expected to track back and help out with the defence.
The best formation for your team is one that gives you balance. For example, placing players who have "chemistry" near each other, which simply means they play well together and demonstrate good teamwork. Another example of achieving balance with any formation is placing a strong player on the same side as a player who is not as strong.
The 4-4-2 is an excellent offensive formation because it utilizes two strikers rather than the one you see in most other formations. In most cases, teams that use the 4-4-2 will use a tall and/or strong striker alongside a more athletic forward to give their teammates more options.
