Bamboo cricket bats are stronger, offer a better 'sweet spot' and deliver more energy to the ball than those made from traditional willow, tests conducted by the University of Cambridge show. Bamboo could, the study argues, help cricket to expand faster in poorer parts of the world and make the sport more environmentally friendly.

Often it's not the bowler who breaks the bats. Really big hitters can break bats like it's going out of fashion though. Example: Adam Gilchrist broke three in the space of half an hour once, during the 2006/07 Ashes. Since the ball normally bounces in cricket, it only ever comes onto the bat at ~120kph max, which most bats can withstand.
I wouldn't recommend buying a bat over the internet, you may not like the feel of it, weight, etc. Some of those Indian bats you see on ebay are EWNI (English Willow Nurtured in India) in essence something between English Willow and Kashmir, they don't have the same properties as English Willow and react very poorly when used with a cricket ball.
